Defend your Rights to Own your Pet!  |

Your right to own your dog is in jeopardy...right now!!!!!

ANIMAL LOVERS MUST READ!!!

How Your Rights to Own Animals is in Danger!

If you own or breed pets and consider yourself an animal lover, you probably believe animals have certain rights: They deserve a good home; They have the right to be fed, watered, and kept in good health; They have the right to be protected from those who would cause them harm by abuse or neglect.

You may watch Animal Planet and have seen shows like Animal Cops that show how local SPCA groups work to save pets and other animals from bad owners and place them in new responsible, loving homes. As pet owners and animal lovers, we understand all the Earth's creatures should have certain rights. Many of us even consider our pets more than just a dog or a cat, but actual as part of our family. We spoil them with treats, toys & beds, attention, and love. Some of our pets even eat better than we do!

Did you know...

In the world today certain animal rights groups and activists take animal welfare to a whole other level. There are animal rights extremists who believe that animals have equal or greater rights than humans. They believe eating meat is animal cruelty, and everyone should be a vegetarian. They are fighting to make it illegal to use animals in Rodeos, Circus, and even illegal to keep them in Zoos! They believe that all animals should be released from human ownership and allowed to live free, and even that humans should take a back seat to animals because we are too controlling and have ruined the Earth for the animals.

Who are these extreme animal rights activists? PETA for one. You may have heard of them. They describe themselves as animal lovers, and receive millions of dollars each year in donations--mostly from people who believe their money goes to saving pets in shelters and finding them new homes. What PETA actually does with a majority of the money is work to pass laws that make it more difficult for people to own animals and even breed them. PETA is actually responsible for putting more healthy dogs and cats to sleep than nearly any shelter in the US. These are not unacceptable animals either, they are very adoptable, but PETA puts them down anyway.

As an animal lover, you probably agree that spaying and neutering your pets is a great thing--and it is. Spaying and neutering helps control the pet population and keeps the numbers of homeless pets down. However, animal rights groups like PETA are fighting to make spaying and neutering mandatory. This is a bad thing if you want to see pets around in future years. When ALL animals are required to be spayed and neutered, the end result is no new pets. No puppies, no kittens, etc. Mandatory spay/neuter is NOT the answer to the overpopulation of homeless pets. Education about responsible pet ownership is. Enforcing current animal crulety law is, but making it illegal to own pets is absolutely absurd to say the least.

At this point, you're probably thinking this all sounds a little crazy and unreal, right? This can't really be happening. THINK AGAIN. It IS real, and it IS happening. All over the country laws are being passed that are making spaying and neutering of dogs and cats mandatory in certain towns & counties.Yours could be next. Breeders, not just the bad ones like puppy mills, but responsible breeders too, are being shut down all over the country by being forced to comply with these new laws. Some licensed breeders who have been producing healthy, sound pups and placing them in loving homes for more than 20 years without a single blemish on their record have been forced to give up most of their dogs, which they consider part of their family, and spay and neuter those they keep. You may even know someone who's had this unfortunate experience, and if you don't yet, you may very soon.

Some of the most incriminating evidence against PETA & other extremist groups are their own words...

"The cat, like the dog, must disappear..... We should cut the domestic cat free from our dominance by neutering, neutering, and more neutering, until our pathetic version of the cat ceases to exist." -John Bryant, Fettered Kingdoms: An Examination of a Changing Ethic, PETA 1982, p.15.

"We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals." - Wayne Pacelle, Senior Vice-President of HSUS, formerly of Friends for Animals; Quoted in Animal People, May, 1993

"The life of an ant and the life of my child should be accorded equal respect." -- Michael W. Fox, Vice President, The Humane Society (The Associated Press, Jan. 15, 1989).

"Human beings, as a species, have no more value than slugs." -- John Davis, editor of Earth First! Journal

How YOU can Help...

If you own an animal and you don't want your rights being taken away, please read the following links to learn more about what's happening and what YOU can do to protect your rights.

Pet-Law: What YOU NEED to KNOW

Protecting your Right to Own Pets: How YOU can help

PETA: Ethical Treatment of Animals OR Extinction of Dogs???

Total Animal Liberation--what does it mean?

One of the easiest & most effective ways to fight for your rights to own or breed pets is to write to your legislators who make the laws. Speak up and let your voice, your opinion, your needs be heard & counted. For detailed info on how to write your legislators click here.

Do not make the mistake of thinking this problem isn't real, that it will go away on it's own, that someone else is taking care of it, or that there's nothing you can do to help. Your help & support is desperately needed.

Due to the progress of PAWS and PETA legislation "slipping through" the cracks, and shocking all of the dog world with the repercussions that are taking place, I feel obligated to inform the public that their rights to even own a dog are in jeopardy. In fact, their legislation is so wacky, that you won't even be able to have a house dog...if the law that all dogs must be housed in a place where there is a "drain" passes...and it is right now being pushed...unless every room in your house has a drain...guess what, you can't have a dog in the house!!

Yes, that is how wacky these people are. Many think of them as 'protectors of animals', but basically, if you read the legislation, you find that they are actually so far out in their ideas that they don't even seem sane. Many are now resorting to breaking and entering and tresspassing in order to "trip up" professional breeders. A fellow breeder I know recenlty had a party want to "visit their kennel" and asked when would be convenient for her. After she said she would return from work at a certain time in the afternoon, they scheduled their visit for the mid morning, and arrived in 3 vehicles and brought movie cameras (her neighbor called her at work and informed her of what was happening!). They knew she would not be able to pick up poop in her yard until she arrived home, so they took several pictures of her dogs with poop piles in the frames and kept them as pictures to show "abuse and neglect"...and this is a legitimate, top notch breeder! This is not the first time this has happened to people I know. In fact, I had a "snooper" try to spy at our kennel last week. By the questions they asked, AND their email address, I figured it out. We now have alarm systems and hidden video cameras in use in our kennel and on our property and "no tresspassing "signs. If you arrive uninvited, you will be investigated, your license plate will be photographed, and we will track you down.

Many of these new laws are being passed in California and the midwest. In many towns you cannot own more than 3 pets. They are instituting mandatory neuter/spay laws, and it will keep moving across the country if we don't all do something now!!

Many breeders can no longer breed dogs. It is illegal in some cities/states. I ask you, if PAWS and PETA shuts down all breeders, where will these supposed "pet lovers" get their pets???

Now, for you sane people, who love your animals, educate yourself on these "whackos" and become informed so you can defend your right to own your dog, check out the following articles and sites. And pass it on!!

I'm all for protecting animals, but there are lines being crossed, and the public needs to know about this!

. If you claim to care, and you complain about the problems, but do nothing to stop them, you have become part of the problem and will have no one to blame but yourself for not doing something when they come to your state, your town, YOUR HOME, to take your dogs and your rights away.

How to write to your representatives/legisilators:

FIRST of all... know who your legislators are. http://www.naiatrust.org/gov/index.htm
can help you figure this out. You can also get good information from the various email lists. I know we don't have time to read more email - but think about getting at least one for your home state or for dogs only. This one is much less busy than Pet-law but often has the same crossposts that it does. Send an email to doglegislation-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to set up a subscription. If you don't like it you can always unsubscrube.

Communicating with Legislators By Mail or Fax

First Rule! DO NO HARM - be Polite!

Use the proper form of address on the envelope and inside address. For senators and representatives: The Honorable [Full Name]

Start your letter: Dear Senator [last name] or Dear Representative [last name]

Make your letter legible. Handwritten letters are great, but if your handwriting isn't very easy to read, type the letter!
It must contain your name, return address and telephone number – readable!
Always be polite. Never, never preach, threaten, or scold!
In the first sentence, state your position. "I oppose [bill number]" or "I am against..."
Then introduce yourself: "I am a hobby breeder of Flat Island Zorchers in Bug Run."
Be clear and concise. State exactly why the legislation concerns you.
Focus on one or two issues at a time – don't try to cover everything in one letter.
Use personal examples. Say how the legislation would affect you.
Say exactly what you want – not ,"Please consider this carefully," but "Please vote AGAINST this."
Keep it short – no more than one page long.
End by saying "Thank You" and " I look forward to your response."
